Hall of Fame pedal steeler
Paul Franklin guides you through his personal approach to the C6 tuning.

All the pockets, positions, and practical theory you need to master the harmonic and melodic possibilities in any style!

THE TUNING

The C6 tuning is different than the E9 in many ways, but perhaps the most important - in my mind - is that I do not see it as a "lick" instrument to the degree that the E9 is.

The C6 lends itself to be approached as a "position" tuning, where finding multiple places to play the needed harmonies leads you to playing very melodically when you solo, and going from "inside" to "outside" is very easy.

BREAK IT DOWN

When you break any song down, you eventually get to the basic chord progression. When you break any chord progression down further, you end up going from Chord A to Chord B.

Learning to navigate just that much: finding ways to move from one chord to the next, is the key to unlocking the C6 neck.

If you practice playing between and over chord changes, all you need to do is inject the stylistic cliches (note choices, rhythms) into your playing to make it fit anywhere!

HOW ARE PAUL'S COURSES DIFFERENT THAN OTHERS I SEE ONLINE?

Pedal Steel Guitar and Musician's Hall of Famer Paul Franklin is a master player and a master teacher. With decades of experience teaching via cassette and in person at clinics and seminars, the arrival of online teaching finally allowed Paul to reach many more players and get deeper into subjects - more than earlier methods and in-person appearances were able to do.

Paul draws on his five decades of live and studio playing with a who's-who of musical titans, from Country legends like George Strait, Alan Jackson and many others to Barbra Streisand, Harry Connick, Jr. and Megadeth.

He is expert on both E9 and C6 tunings and has an encyclopedic knowledge of classic steel styes from the early masters of the instrument. Paul was mentored by legends like Buddy Emmons, Lloyd Green, Pete Drake, Weldon Myrick, Hal Rugg, John Hughey, all fellow Hall of Famers.

His guitar dominated the charts during the Country boom of the '80's and '90's, he toured the world with Dire Straits and continues to be the first-call pedal steel player in the Nashville studio scene.

From ripping Rock, to twangy Country, to Jazz, to Western Swing and all points in between, Paul honors the past and keeps pushing the instrument forward. It is his desire to share all of the knowledge he has acquired for future generations to study and carry the pedal steel guitar torch into the future.
